Turning Your Dream Into A Goal

This is by far the most important piece of advice I can give you. Make a decision. Make the decision. The decision to turn your dream into your goal. It's all very well and good having the idea in your mind and thinking "well wouldn't this be nice if...", but until you decide that you will commit to making this a goal - it won't happen.

A dream is a dream for a reason - it's damn near impossible for you to achieve. Take the speed of the mile run for example. 150 years ago, the concept of a human running mile in under 5 minutes seemed unfathomable. In 1865, Richard Webster completed a mile in 4.36 and it then seemed impossible to complete a mile in under 4 and a half minutes - in 1868 it was done in 4.29. People thought surely it couldn't be done in under 4 minutes, and now the record is 3.43. Do you see where I'm going with this? Everything is impossible until it is done - so is your dream.

So, you need to decide; is this really a dream that you want to live, or just a nice fantasy? Do you really want this? Are you willing to fight for it? Once you've answered these questions, you can begin the work towards achieving your goal.

  • Change your mindset

Now that you've decided that your dream is within your reach, it's time to change the way you think. It's no use deciding to achieve your goal if you don't believe in yourself. You need to change your phrasing of your life.

What I mean by that is this:

Nothing is a possibility, it's a probability. You don't want to do something, you will do something. Don't plan for if something happens, plan for when something happens. This change of thought isn't just for when it comes to your goal - it's for every action in life. If you change your mindset for your entire life in this way, you will always be sending these messages into the universe and you'll be drawing them to you. Law of attraction - the best way to do something is to believe you've already done it.

As well as altering your perspective, you need to identify your purpose. It's no good having a goal if you don't know why you have it. You need a purpose that gets you out of bed every morning. That makes you work every single day to get where you want to be. Your purpose needs to be deep-rooted, it needs to be who you are or who you want to be, it can't be superficial. A superficial purpose leads to superficial effort.

  • Research

As with anything - you can't turn a dream into a goal when you don't actually have any knowledge. It's all very well declaring that you will be a successful musician or entrepreneur - but without any research, changing "I want" to "I will" has nothing behind it.

Start off by getting advice from and researching people who are where you want to be. Read into their stories, their journey, how they made it. Everyone's will be different, but the more you know the better idea you'll have of how to get there. As well as this, you need to know your industry.

Some things right off the bat I would suggest for you to look into are:

Marketing (e.g. Social media presence)

Paths into the industry (e.g. In music, performing)

Time management

What skills do you need for your goal?

Can you get a mentor?

  • Plan

Everyone makes plans differently. I make loads and loads of lists. A big list, a smaller list, a detailed list, a time list...so many lists. Other people like mind maps or flow charts. Whatever works for you - you need to make a plan. Once you've changed your mindset so that your goal is in your sights and you've done your research - it's time to turn it into progress.

If you've got a rather large goal - let's say to be fit and healthy. It can be incredibly daunting to think about making a plan to reach that goal if you are so far off. So, you need to break it down. Categorize it into mental health, physical health, diet, social health...and then focus on one category - then break this one down even further. Physical health breaks down into building muscle and increasing stamina - focus on one of these. Break it down again. Do you see where I'm going?

Once you've broken your goal down into chewable quantities - make it your mantra to carry out one action a day that leads you towards your goal. It doesn't have to be anything drastic - the smallest acts make the largest difference. Just because you're deciding to turn your dream into a goal doesn't mean you have to change your entire life and revolve it around that one focus - if you attempt this it will be much easier to fail because you haven't built it up. Sure, as you go on you need to increase your focus on that goal, but to begin with it needs to be a slow build.

  • Prepare for the work

Like I said at the beginning of this post, a dream is a dream for a reason - it isn't going to be a picnic. You need to prepare yourself for work. Don't expect life to drop what you need right into your lap. Prepare for hardships, for wanting to give up, for everything going wrong, for rejection. Prepare to stay motivated.

You'll need to make sure you keep yourself motivated, otherwise you won't put in the effort needed to make it happen. That's why having a purpose is so important - your purpose is what motivates you. Other ways on staying motivated for me is looking into success stories - even ones I've read through a dozen times. Knowing that their hard work paid off makes me sure mine will too. Also, motivational videos are a great source - they really do make me get my act back together and remember why I'm doing this.

Don't forget, though, never lose your passion. Don't let the hard work your putting in make you resentful of your dream. Every now and then, take a step back and reconnect with yourself and your passion. Otherwise when you finally achieve your goal, you may not want it anymore.
